Superior Grocers Launches EBT SNAP Payment Option Through Instacart

Santa Fe Springs, California-based Superior Grocers will now accept Electronic Benefits Transfer Supplemental Nutrition and Assistance Program for same-day delivery and pickup via Instacart.

With this program, EBT SNAP participants will now be able to use their benefits to access fresh food and pantry staples online from Superior Grocers’ 47 locations across California.

This launch follows the U.S. Department of Agriculture Food and Nutrition Service’s most recent approval of Superior Grocers to accept EBT SNAP payments online via Instacart. With transportation often serving as a barrier to the grocery store, Superior Grocers and Instacart hopes to make accessing food easier for customers.

“We are very excited to now accept EBT SNAP payments for same-day online delivery and curbside grocery pick-up orders. This will increase accessibility of Superior Grocers’ products with great quality, variety and value to our customers throughout Southern California,” said Dale Nakata, VP of marketing.

EBT SNAP participants will be able to shop from Superior Grocers via the Instacart website and mobile app. Once an Instacart customer profile is created, customers can enter their EBT food card information as a form of payment in their profile. Customers will need a secondary form of payment for non-food items such as taxes, tips and fees per federal SNAP guidelines. Customers can then enter their zip code to determine if they are near a participating retailer and begin shopping and selecting items from retailers’ EBT eligible products.

Once items are added to their cart, customers will be able to select how much of their benefits they would like to allocate to the order. Orders for delivery and pickup can be placed by customers for receipt in as fast as an hour or scheduled several days in advance.

Superior Grocers is one of the largest independently-owned chain of grocery stores in Southern California. Superior began its operations in 1981 with one store and now operates 47 stores throughout Southern California, and employs nearly 4,500 associates.

Superior Foundation, its non-profit arm, was founded 20 years ago. The foundation’s efforts make a direct connection with local communities providing ongoing support to schools, youth programs and scholarship foundations. More than $3 million have been donated to schools and non-profits in support of youth and education in Southern California.
