Barilla North America in Northbrook, Illinois, has a new line of Italian sauces. Vero Gusto Italian sauce comes in four varieties and are all handcrafted in Italy.

Each sauce (SRP $5.99) features a signature Italian ingredient:

  • Vero Gusto Tomato & Basil: featuring Genovese Basil PDO (protected designation of origin; the basil can only come from this region), which is harvested in select areas of Genoa near the Mediterranean Sea;
  • Vero Gusto Heritage Marinara: made with Italian Datterini Tomatoes from the Emilia Romagna and Lombardy regions;
  • Vero Gusto Calabrian Marinara: made with smoky, spicy and fruity Calabrian Peppers, native to the southern Mediterranean climate of Calabria; and
  • Vero Gusto Sicilian Herb: created with Sicilian Oregano.

Vero Gusto is made much like a homemade sauce. The first step is sautéing garlic, onions and extra-virgin olive oil together, then cooking the ingredients.

“We are always exploring new ways to bring high-quality Italian ingredients and products to people, and Vero Gusto is a perfect example of that commitment to quality and innovation,” said Jean-Pierre Comte, president of Barilla Americas. “Vero Gusto sauces provide people with a ‘true taste’ of Italy in their own kitchens.”

These sauces are made in Italy from Italian-grown tomatoes (no added water or paste), onion, garlic, sea salt and 100 percent extra-virgin olive oil for richness. They contain no added sugar, no artificial ingredients and no preservatives. They also are Non-GMO Project verified, gluten-free and kosher. Select retailers currently are carrying the sauces but there are plans for gradual national distribution over the next two years.

Barilla is a family company chaired by brothers Guido, Luca and Paolo Barilla. It was founded by their great-grandfather, Pietro Barilla, who opened a bakery in Parma in 1877.
