Genuine Local, a local commercial kitchen and small business accelerator in Meredith, New Hampshire, is now a USDA Certified Organic facility.
As stated by the USDA, the facility shall, “demonstrate that they are protecting natural resources, conserving biodiversity and using only approved substances.” An organic certification opens another channel for success for the growing food businesses that Genuine Local services.
Genuine Local is in its fourth year of operation as a small business accelerator with a focus in building community within the food world. With the surge of consumers switching to a healthier or organic lifestyle in recent years, the demand for organic retail items has increased as well. As one of the only small batch co-packaging manufacturers in the state, “the decision to become a certified organic handler and processor was a no-brainer,” said Co-Founder Mary Macdonald.
This transition is one that has been ongoing for the last six months. Changing sanitization practices, sourcing and food handling practices were all included in the steps leading up to the certification.
“Food safety is a top priority for us, but protecting our local environment and agriculture are just as critical,” said Co-Founder Gavin Macdonald. “Although it has been a bit of an adjustment, it is one we have been looking forward to making.”
