Gala Foods Supermarkets, based in New York, has been selecting 40 customers every Thursday this month to win groceries across all eight of its locations. The promotion runs through Dec. 27 at the participating supermarkets in Bridgeport, Connecticut; Brooklyn, New York; Brentwood, Freeport and Bay Shore in Long Island.

“We know that our customers work hard to save their dollars, especially during the holiday season, so we want to do everything possible to embrace the holiday spirit by giving away free groceries,” said Jenny Jorge, VP of operations at Aurora Grocery Group. “We are all excited to see our customer’s reactions when we surprise them during checkout to let them know they have just won their groceries free. There’s great energy around our stores. Our employees are enjoying it just as much as our customers.”

Winners are selected at random throughout the day at the time of checkout, and there is no need for the customer to sign up or register for a chance to win. They simply shop on Thursday as usual and see if they are the winner at that specific time and register aisle during checkout.

In addition to free groceries, winners soon can expect to save dollars from the loyalty program—Gala Bucks.

Gala Foods Supermarkets are part of the Aurora Grocery Group family. The founders of the company are the Peña family. The first store opened under the Compare Foods name in 1989 in Freeport, New York. Currently, there are 24 supermarket locations in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and North Carolina.

The company also is part of the Key Food Stores Co-Operative, founded in Brooklyn, New York, in 1937. Key Food includes more than 265 primarily member-owned and corporate grocery stores with $2.7 billion in annual sales. In addition to Key Food, these stores operate under various other banners including Food Universe, The Food Emporium, SuperFresh, Food Dynasty and Gala Fresh Supermarkets in all five boroughs, Long Island, upstate New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and Pennsylvania.
