Delhaize America and the union representing employees at a key Hannaford distribution center in South Portland, Maine, have agreed on a three-year contract.
The agreement ends an impasse that resulted in workers going out on a 24-hour strike.
Ahold Delhaize is the parent corporation of Hannaford Supermarkets, which is based in Scarborough, Maine. Delhaize America Distribution LLC, a subsidiary of Ahold Delhaize, operates the distribution center.
According to a statement issued by Delhaize America, United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) 1445 accepted Delhaize America’s original offer, which the grocer noted was a “fair and competitive agreement.
“Delhaize America Distribution LLC is pleased that the situation is now resolved and looks forward to serving its customers.”
UFCW 1445 represents 246 workers at the center. The center supplies 106 Hannaford markets in New England.
Workers rejected the company contract offer on Feb. 17 and authorized a strike. The next week, workers walked off the job for a day.
Published reports said current workers received hourly wage increases for each of the three years of the contract. Healthcare coverage is maintained at the current cost for the length of the new contract. Hourly wages paid to new hires are lowered.
