Two-time Massachusetts gubernatorial candidate Mr. Christy Mihos, 67, the former owner of Christy’s convenience stores, died March 25 in Stuart, Florida, following a recent cancer diagnosis. Christy’s once had 144 stores in Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Maine. Most of the stores were sold to 7-Eleven.
Mr. Mihos served as vice chairman of the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority and predicted the Boston transportation project known as The Big Dig would cost taxpayers billions more than originally planned because of corruption and mismanagement; he later, in 2012, authored a book, “Rotten to the Core: The Real Dirt on Boston’s Big Dig.” He also served as co-chairman of the Alliance to Protect Nantucket Sound, a group opposing Cape Wind, an organization that proposed to build a wind farm in Nantucket.
Mr. Mihos was born and raised in Brockton, Massachusetts, and worked in his family’s supermarket. He graduated from Brockton High and Stonehill College. During the 1980s he was president of the board of stewards at the Panagia Greek Orthodox Church in Cohasset, Massachusetts.
