WinCo Foods plans to open a new “smaller format” store next year in Keizer, Oregon, at an old Haggen lot. The approximately 40,000-s.f. concept will be called Waremart by WinCo—harkening back to WinCo’s original name when it was founded in Boise, Idaho, in 1967, according to the Statesman Journal.

The newspaper reports that WinCo has closed purchase on the lot at 5450 River Road North. The lot has changed hands often in recent years after Haggen tried unsuccessfully to establish a store there in 2015. The Northwest grocer scooped up a number of properties when the merger between Safeway and Albertsons forced the two to sell stores throughout the state, including the former Albertsons in Keizer. That Haggen location shuttered within months.

As the Journal reports, the Waremart by WinCo store will sell food in bulk—such as cereal and pasta—along with its meat and produce departments. WinCo also will carry gluten-free and organic products.

Employee-owned WinCo, which operates 110 stores in eight states, expects to hire about 70 people at the new store.
