Fareway donated a truckload of 21,600 dozen eggs to the Food Bank of Iowa in Des Moines on June 8, followed by donations of 10,800 dozen eggs each to the Northeast Iowa Food Bank in Waterloo, Food Bank for the Heartland in Omaha (Nebraska), Hawkeye Area Community Action Program Inc. (HACAP) in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Food Bank of Siouxland Inc. in Sioux City, Iowa. That is more than 64,800 dozen eggs in total.
The contributions were made in honor of Gov. Terry Branstad’s Iowa Egg Month, which took place in May. Iowa’s egg farmers lead the nation, caring for nearly 59 million laying hens that produce 16 billion eggs per year, according to the Iowa Egg Council.
Nebraska’s egg farmers are one of the top 10 producers in the nation as well, caring for nearly nine million laying hens, according to the American Egg Board.
“Fareway is proud to provide this donation to the Food Bank of Iowa in Des Moines,” said Reynolds W. Cramer, CEO of Boone, Iowa-based Fareway. “We are excited to partner in helping provide a nutritious food option to those in need.”
All food banks were grateful as eggs are often a difficult food item to secure and they are a highly sought after to provide a nutritious and economical diet.
The Food Bank of Iowa is a private, not-for-profit organization striving to meet the critical food needs of a diverse population through a network of more than 375 partner agencies in 55 counties. These partner agencies include food pantries, soup kitchens, homeless and domestic violence shelters, child and adult care centers, and youth and senior programs.
The Northeast Iowa Food Bank provides nutritious food and grocery products to non-profit organizations and individuals in Northeast Iowa, while offering hunger education programs to the community and those in need.
Food Bank for the Heartland is a non-profit organization that distributes food to 244 schools and 225 food pantries, emergency shelters and other non-profit partners. It is the largest food bank in Nebraska and Iowa, serving 93 counties in the two-state region.
HACAP began service in Linn County in 1965 to help minimize the negative impact of low-wage incomes on families and the community overall. Today, HACAP provides a variety of anti-poverty programs and collaborates with community partners to serve individuals and families in a six-county region. The HACAP Food Reservoir distributes food to more than 102 non-profit Partner Agencies and operates anti-hunger programs in seven counties.
The Food Bank of Siouxland, a non-profit organization, strives to be responsive to the needs of its agencies, donors and volunteers by efficiently soliciting and distributing food to feeding programs for the needy.
