Big Y, HP Hood Expand Partnership, Promote Local Farmers, And More…

Big Y Foods has launched an expanded partnership with local milk processor HP Hood as well as an in-store campaign designed to support local farmers from the Berkshires to the Pioneer Valley region. Big Y shoppers can support the farmers by purchasing milk at participating Big Y stores.

This announcement comes after the two family businesses from Massachusetts—80-year-old Big Y and 170-year-old Hood—began working together to supply milk and other dairy products through Big Y’s supermarkets and gas-convenience stores. With these added demands, HP Hood dairy now processes an additional 5 million gallons of milk at its Agawam facility and has added 12 new employees to its workforce…

Guiding Stars, a nutrition guidance program based in Portland, Maine, has updated its approach to factoring dietary cholesterol into its ratings system in response to evolving scientific evidence and changes reflected in the latest 2015 Dietary Guidelines for Americans. Under the new algorithm, only foods with the very highest amounts of dietary cholesterol, 300mg or more per 100 calories, will not earn stars. The new algorithm allows nutritious yet cholesterol-containing foods like eggs and shrimp to earn stars.
