Brookshire Brothers President and CEO Jerry Johnson talked to fourth- and fifth-grade students on March 23 about the grocery business. He did it in an “appealing” way, by taking a box of bananas and some swag (Chiquita sunglasses and string backpacks) to the children and explaining how the top-selling item in America’s grocery stores gets from Central and South America to their table in Lufkin, Texas. His talk incorporated all of Brookshire Brothers’ operations, including transportation, warehouse and distribution, as well as the job responsibilities associated with them.

He traced the banana from where it’s farmed to how it ends up on the table as part of Brookhollow Elementary School’s Keys to Success program for young men.

Johnson explained to the 11- and 12-year-olds about the many job opportunities available in the grocery business—from truck driver to stocker, store director to computer programmer and checker to, of course, produce manager.
