Southeastern Grocers Taps Supermarket Veteran As COO

Anthony T. Hucker has joined Jacksonville, Florida-based Southeastern Grocers, parent company of Bi-Lo, Harveys and Winn-Dixie.

Hucker most recently served as president and COO of St. Louis-based Schnuck Markets Inc., which he joined in September 2013. Prior to that, he was president of Ahold-owned Giant Food, headquartered in Landover, Maryland. He also served on the executive board for Ahold USA.

Building on a 30-plus-year career in the retail industry, Hucker, in addition to his roles with Schnucks and Giant, spent seven years at Walmart in a variety of leadership positions. During his tenure as corporate VP, he pioneered and activated the Walmart Express concept.

Hucker began his career in the European retail industry as a food industry analyst. He then worked for 10 years with Aldi, where he served in a variety of leadership assignments in Germany, Austria and the U.S. as well as part of the original startup team for Aldi U.K.

Graduating with honors, Hucker holds a bachelor of arts in retail marketing from the University of Manchester and a diploma in international marketing from the Chartered Institute of Marketing and has continued executive education in technology, strategy, leadership and mergers and acquisitions at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, Harvard Business School and University of Chicago Booth School of Business, respectively.

Southeastern Grocers operates more than 750 grocery stores, 140 liquor stores and 500 in-store pharmacies throughout Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina and South Carolina.
