Trader Joe’s Aims For Its Eggs To Be Completely Cage-Free By 2025

Last updated on June 13th, 2024 at 11:53 am

Trader Joe’s says that the supply side of the egg business has evolved to the point that it can set a 2025 deadline to sell only eggs purchased from suppliers who use cage-free hens.

It has set an earlier deadline, 2020, for selling cage-free eggs in several states: California, Oregon, Washington, Arizona, New Mexico and Colorado.

The retailer said it made the change to cage-free for its Trader Joe’s brand eggs in 2005. Since then, it has seen steady sales increases and now 62 percent of all eggs Trader Joe’s sells are from cage-free hens. Of all eggs currently sold in the U.S. across a variety of retailers, about 11 percent are cage-free, Trader Joe’s said.
