Food Lion will donate 49,000 meals to Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina through Food Lion Feeds in honor of the North Carolina Panthers scoring 49 points in Sunday’s championship game in Charlotte. The grocer is donating 1,000 meals for each point scored during the game.

The Panthers bested the Arizona Cardinals, 49-15, over the weekend and will face off against the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl 50 on Sunday, Feb. 7.

“We are so excited about their big win and upcoming trip to the big game,” said Christy Phillips-Brown, Food Lion’s director of external communications and community relations. “We thought this was a great way to honor our hometown team since hunger relief is a cause we support together in Charlotte.”

Through Food Lion Feeds, Salisbury, North Carolina-based Food Lion has committed to provide 500 million meals to people and families in need by the end of 2020. Since the launch of Food Lion Feeds in 2014, the grocer has partnered with Charlotte teams on hunger-relief donations through organizations such as Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina.
