Safeway has acquired a former Fresh & Easy store in Willow Glen Village Shopping Center at 1489 Bird Avenue in San Jose, California. The 23,200-s.f. vacant building will transform into a new Safeway, with construction beginning in the spring and a grand opening slated for summer 2016.

“We are excited to open a second location in the Willow Glen neighborhood and create over 100 new jobs,” said Tom Schwilke, president of Safeway Northern California.

This will be one of four new Safeway stores set to open in Northern California in 2016, ranging from 23,000 to 75,000 s.f. The other grand openings include: Fairmont Shopping Center, Pacifica; The Orchards, Walnut Creek; and The Shops at the Ridge, Oakland.

Safeway, headquartered in Pleasanton, is a division of Albertsons Cos.

Following several years of struggle, the Fresh & Easy chain filed for bankruptcy and decided in late 2015 to close the remainder of its stores in California, Arizona and Nevada.
