Chipotle Mexican Grill suspects that the Norovirus may be the reason for gastrointestinal illnesses that have led to the closure of its restaurant in Cleveland Circle, near Boston College in Massachusetts.
As many as 120 college students have reported gastrointestinal illnesses. At the time of this report, health officials said it was not linked to the recent multi-state E. coli outbreak linked to Chipotle restaurants.
Norovirus can be transmitted through person-to-person contact, contaminated surface areas and through food and drink.
The City of Boston Inspectional Services Division cited the Cleveland Circle Chipotle restaurant for two violations, including improper temperatures of chicken and meat; and a staff member working while ill. The restaurant has been closed until further notice and is undergoing a thorough cleaning process.
On Friday, Dec. 4, Chipotle announced further company-wide plans to take further food safety steps, including DNA-based tests in produce.
