Health Groups Support Bill To Raise Tobacco Sales Age To 21, And More…

Several public health organizations hailed the legislation—introduced Sept. 30 by U.S. Sen. Brian Schatz (D-Hawaii), U.S. Rep. Diana DeGette (D-Colorado) and their co-sponsors—that would prohibit the sale of tobacco products to anyone under the age of 21 nationwide. The groups claim that the Tobacco to 21 Act will reduce tobacco use among young people, save lives and help make the next generation tobacco free. The federal legislation comes on the heels of Hawaii becoming the first state to raise the tobacco sales age to 21. Hawaii’s law will take effect Jan. 1. Speedway recently raised more than $2 million to support 19 different children’s hospitals through the 24th annual Speedway Miracle Celebration and Golf Tournament. The event involved more than 700 golfers and raised funds for the Children’s Miracle Network of hospitals, which treats children throughout the U.S. and Canada. The money will be used for the costs of pediatric medical treatments, services and equipment for many sick and injured children who receive care at hospitals in the network, which provides about 32 million treatments every year.
