Joe Kelley, president of the Stop & Shop New England division, has resigned, effective immediately. Stop & Shop’s parent company, Ahold USA, says Kelley is leaving to pursue other career opportunities.

Don Sussman, division president of Stop & Stop New York Metro, also will oversee the Stop & Shop New England division on an interim basis. Additional details about Kelley’s departure and Stop & Shop New England’s plans were not released.

Kelley became president of Stop & Shop New England in mid-2012 with more than more than 25 years of retail experience. Before joining Stop & Shop, Kelley was the chairman, president and CEO of Marsh Supermarkets. Prior to working at Marsh, he was the EVP for Price Chopper. He joined Price Chopper in 2005 as the VP of sales, merchandising and marketing and was promoted four times there over five years. Kelley also held leadership roles at Bozzuto’s, Adams Hometown Markets in Connecticut, A&P and Purity Supreme.

The Stop & Shop New England division, headquartered in Quincy, Massachusetts, operates approximately 220 stores across Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut. The division employs approximately 34,000 associates.
