Aldi Opening New Store in Greensboro, N.C.

Greensboro, N.C., is getting yet another grocery store.

The Business Journal reports that Aldi, a Batavia, Ill.-based subsidiary of Germany’s Aldi Group, plans to open a new store at 1507 New Garden Rd. sometime in 2013.

Aldi bills itself as a super-discount chain with a no-frills approach and a limited selection of 1,400 items. The company already has 10 stores in the Triad located in Asheboro, Burlington, Greensboro, High Point, Kernersville, Lexington, Thomasville and Winston-Salem.

The new Aldi store comes at a time when the landscape among grocers in the Triad is becoming increasingly competitive.

Food Lion and Lowes Food have a major presence in the Triad, but specialty grocery stores also are growing in the market, according to the Journal. Whole Foods, which already has a store in Winston-Salem, is opening a store in Greensboro on April 12.

There also is talk of a potential Trader Joe’s locating in Greensboro, just down the road from the new Whole Foods.
