The Harris Teeter Inc. supermarket chain will donate $215,000 to its food bank partners, including Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest North Carolina in Winston-Salem.
Harris Teeter raised the funds during its annual spring golf outing. According to The Business Journal, proceeds will be divided among 14 of Harris Teeter’s food-bank partner agencies.
“The past several years have been especially challenging ones for food banks nationwide,” says Kay Carter, executive director for Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina in Charlotte. “As requests for food assistance have continued to increase dramatically, it has meant so much to Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina to have Harris Teeter beside us in our battle to end hunger. They embody what philanthropy really means through their dedicated efforts to feed hungry children, seniors and families.”
With the help of vendors who participated in the golf tournament, Harris Teeter will donated funds to:

- Loaves & Fishes in Charlotte
- Manna FoodBank in Asheville
- Lowcountry Food Bank in Charleston, S.C.
- Greensboro Urban Ministries in Greensboro
- Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest North Carolina in Winston-Salem
- Capital Area Food Bank, So Others Might Eat in Washington, D.C.
- Miriam’s Kitchen in Washington, D.C.
- Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina in Raleigh
- Inter-Faith Food Shuttle in Raleigh
- Loudoun Interfaith Relief in Leesburg, Va.
- Food Bank of Southeastern Virginia in Norfolk, Va.
- Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle Tennessee in Nashville, Tenn.
Harris Teeter, a subsidiary of Charlotte-based Ruddick Corp., had sales of $4.1 billion last year. The grocery chain has 23,000 employees and 204 stores in the Carolinas, Virginia, Georgia, Tennessee, Maryland, Delaware, Florida and Washington, D.C.
