Survey Asks: Is Target Cheaper than Walmart?

Last updated on June 13th, 2024 at 12:10 pm

Target Corp. holds up fairly well in a pocketbook-price battle with rival Wal-Mart Stores Inc., operator of Walmart and Sam’s Club, according to a new retail survey reported on by the New Mexico Business Weekly.

Kantar Retail IQ, which does semi-annual price checks at the two retailers, found that Target customers generally paid slightly less for an equivalent shopping trip (Target won three times in the study to Wal-Mart’s two).

The catch: Target offers more temporary deals, so customers can’t be as brand-conscious if they want to save.

Last year a poll of shoppers’ activity showed the number of shoppers growing for Target and falling for Walmart.

Charleston, S.C.-based America’s Research Group and UBS Global Equity Research surveyed 1,000 U.S. consumers and found Target shopping levels rose to 20.6 percent from 13.9 percent last year, while Walmart shopping levels dropped to 32.7 percent from 43.8 percent.
